Health And Safety Policy
Kensington Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Kensington Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, our customers and any other persons who may be affected by our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks in homes, offices and commercial premises where we provide our services.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing appropriate control measures. Health and safety considerations are integrated into the planning and delivery of all cleaning work, including on-site visits, transportation of equipment and the safe use of cleaning products.
Management at Kensington Carpet Cleaning is responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are provided for health and safety, that staff receive appropriate training, and that our procedures are reviewed and updated in line with current legislation and best practice.
Responsibilities of Management and Staff
Management is responsible for establishing and maintaining this policy, providing safe equipment, selecting suitable cleaning products, and ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for typical work activities and any non-routine tasks. Supervisors and senior staff are expected to monitor compliance with safety procedures and to address any unsafe practices without delay.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment as trained, wear personal protective equipment where required, and promptly report any accidents, near misses, hazards or defects in equipment or materials.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work at any property, our technicians conduct a visual inspection of the area to identify potential hazards such as trailing cables, slippery floors, restricted access, poor lighting, and the presence of children, pets or vulnerable persons. Where risks are identified, suitable control measures are implemented, such as using warning signs, securing hoses and cables, and arranging safe access routes.
Formal risk assessments are carried out for common tasks such as hot water extraction cleaning, stain treatment, upholstery cleaning and hard floor cleaning. These assessments inform our safe systems of work and staff training, and are reviewed periodically or following any significant change in equipment, products or methods.
Use of Chemicals and Cleaning Products
Kensington Carpet Cleaning uses cleaning solutions that are appropriate for professional carpet and upholstery care. We obtain and retain safety data sheets for all products in use, and ensure that these are available to staff. Products are selected and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable regulations.
Staff are trained in safe handling, dilution, application and storage of chemicals. Where necessary, suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection is provided and must be used. Products are never decanted into unlabelled containers, and chemicals are kept out of reach of children and pets at all times while on customer premises.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
Our equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, hoses and tools, is inspected regularly and maintained in safe working order. Defective or damaged equipment is removed from service immediately and only returned to use once repaired or replaced.
Technicians receive training in the correct operation of all machinery, including start-up and shut-down procedures, safe lifting and moving, and how to isolate equipment in an emergency. Electrical equipment and leads are checked for obvious damage before each use, and only used with appropriate power supplies and extensions.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Manual handling tasks such as lifting machines, moving furniture and carrying equipment are common in carpet and upholstery cleaning. To reduce the risk of injury, staff are trained in safe lifting techniques, team lifting where necessary, and the use of handling aids where available.
Whenever possible, work is planned to minimise heavy lifting and awkward postures. Customers may be asked to move delicate or valuable items themselves before our visit, or to consent to adjustments that reduce the manual handling risk for our staff.
Working in Customer Premises
When working in homes, offices or commercial venues, our staff are guests in those premises and must conduct themselves safely and respectfully. We take care to protect flooring and furnishings, manage cables and hoses to avoid trip hazards, and display warning signs where floors may be damp or slippery.
Technicians will explain the work to be carried out and advise customers, staff and visitors to keep away from work areas where necessary. We pay particular attention to safeguarding children, vulnerable adults and pets by restricting access to equipment and chemicals.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as practicable. Each report is investigated to determine root causes and to identify improvements to our procedures, equipment or training. Records of incidents and actions taken are maintained for monitoring and review.
Our staff are briefed on emergency arrangements including how to respond to injury, illness, chemical spills, fire, electrical faults and flooding. Where appropriate, work will be stopped immediately if imminent danger is identified, and the area made safe before continuing.
Health, Welfare and Training
Kensington Carpet Cleaning recognises the importance of staff welfare, including adequate rest breaks, access to drinking water and reasonable working hours. Where work involves driving between multiple properties, schedules are planned to avoid undue time pressure and fatigue.
All technicians receive initial and ongoing training in health and safety, safe operation of equipment, chemical handling, personal protective equipment and customer care. Additional training is provided whenever new equipment or cleaning products are introduced, or when procedures change.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
We monitor our health and safety performance through incident reports, feedback from staff and customers, and periodic checks on working practices. This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance or our operations.
By following this policy, Kensington Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
